What is Usui Reiki?
Reiki is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word "Reiki" comes from the Japanese words "Rei" (universal) and "Ki" (life energy). It involves the transfer of universal energy from the practitioner's palms to the patient, promoting emotional or physical healing.
Reiki was developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. Since its inception, it has been adapted into various cultural traditions, growing in popularity worldwide. Understanding its historical context helps appreciate its modern applications.
Reiki works on the premise that life force energy flows through us. If this energy is low, we are more likely to get sick or feel stress. Conversely, if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Practitioners believe that by channeling this energy, they can promote healing.
Where Does the Usui System of Reiki Healing Come From?
Usui Shiki Ryoho, also known as the Usui System of Natural Healing or Reiki Healing, is named after its founder, Dr. Mikao Usui. According to oral history, Dr. Usui's journey began with a burning question: "How did Jesus heal?" Driven by his dedication and unique gifts, Dr. Usui ultimately received the gift of Reiki. He devoted the rest of his life to developing a system of practice that allowed this gift to be passed on to others. This method of connecting with Reiki energy has endured through generations and remains relevant across different cultures worldwide.
Chujiro Hayashi, one of Dr. Usui's students, furthered his master's work by opening a clinic where he could observe the effects of Reiki on a variety of ailments. Mrs. Hawayo Takata from Hawaii recovered from serious ailments at Hayashi’s clinic and became his first student from outside Japan. She practiced and taught Reiki across the US and Canada from 1937 until her death in 1980. Her dedication to living within the Reiki practice provided her students with the benefits of Dr. Usui's gift.
It is a practice that cannot be fully learned through books; it must be experienced through receiving treatments, attending classes, and engaging with Reiki practitioners, students, and masters who practice this form.
